Let me start with a number.

13,800,000,000 Years since the universe began

Thirteen point eight billion years ago, everything that exists — every atom, every star, every galaxy, every thought you have ever had — was compressed into a single point of infinite density and temperature. Then it expanded. We call it the Big Bang, which is almost offensively simple a name for the most dramatic event that has ever occurred.

I want to sit with that for a moment. Not rush past it. Everything came from one point. The computer or phone you're reading this on. The air in your lungs. Every person who has ever lived. Every book ever written. Every piece of music. All of it — one point.


The Singularity — What We Actually Know

The singularity is what physicists call the state of the universe at t=0. At that moment, the laws of physics as we understand them break down completely. General relativity, quantum mechanics — neither of them can describe what happened at or before that moment. We hit a wall.

What we do know is what happened after. In the first fraction of a second — and I mean a fraction so small it's hard to even write it — the universe expanded from something incomprehensibly small to something incomprehensibly large. This is called cosmic inflation.

Within the first three minutes, protons and neutrons formed. Within 380,000 years, atoms formed and light could travel freely for the first time — that light is still travelling. We can detect it today as the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. We are literally seeing the afterglow of creation.


The Scale Problem

Here is where it gets genuinely difficult for the human brain. The observable universe is about 93 billion light years across. One light year is roughly 9.46 trillion kilometres. Try to hold that number in your head. You can't — and that's the point.

  • Milky Way to Andromeda: ~2.5 million light years
  • Observable universe: ~93 billion light years
  • Estimated number of galaxies: 2 trillion

And all of that — every single bit of it — came from one point. The math says the entire observable universe was once smaller than an atom. Not a small room. Not a grain of sand. Smaller than a single atom.


What Is "Nothing"?

This is the question that keeps me up at night. Before the Big Bang — if "before" even makes sense when time itself didn't exist — what was there?

The honest answer is: we don't know. Some physicists say the universe came from a quantum fluctuation in a vacuum. But a quantum vacuum is not really "nothing" — it's a quantum field with measurable energy. So we're just pushing the question back. Where did the quantum vacuum come from?

Others propose that time itself began at the Big Bang — that asking "what came before" is like asking "what is north of the North Pole?" The question doesn't have an answer because the direction doesn't exist there. Stephen Hawking argued something like this.

The question "what happened before the Big Bang?" may be as meaningless as asking "what is one kilometre north of the North Pole?"

But I'm not satisfied with that. It feels like a way of avoiding the question rather than answering it. Why did the Big Bang happen at all? Why is there something rather than nothing? I genuinely don't know. And neither does anyone else.


Where Does That Leave Us?

Here is the part I find most staggering. You and I are made of atoms. Those atoms were forged inside stars that lived and died billions of years ago. The iron in your blood was made in a supernova explosion. You are, quite literally, made of star stuff.

We are the universe becoming aware of itself. 13.8 billion years of cosmic evolution produced matter, then stars, then planets, then life, then consciousness — and that consciousness is now sitting here reading words about the process that created it. The universe folded back on itself.

My Opinion

I think about this a lot. Not in a way that makes me anxious — more in a way that recalibrates everything. When I'm stressed about something small, there's a part of my brain that zooms out and shows me the full picture. 93 billion light years. 13.8 billion years. Two trillion galaxies.

And somehow, against all odds, one planet around one unremarkable star in one of those two trillion galaxies developed life that became conscious enough to understand its own origin. The fact that we exist at all is the most improbable thing in the universe.

I don't think that makes life meaningless. I think it makes it incredibly precious. We are the universe's way of experiencing itself. Every moment of curiosity, every piece of music, every genuine connection between two people — that's the universe becoming more aware of what it is.

That's not terrifying. That's extraordinary.
